S2 E12 Ash and the Clever Princess
Listen HERE
Once there was a king, and he had a daughter who was very clever. She loved to talk back. When someone said something, the princess always had a smart reply to say back. Then the other person had nothing to say.
The king was getting old. He was thinking about the future of his kingdom. He wanted his daughter to rule the kingdom with someone smart like her. But so far, no one was a match for the princess. So, the king set up a contest to find a good match. The King told everyone in the kingdom about the contest. The one to impress the princess had the chance to marry her and have half of the kingdom.
Three brothers heard about the contest. They were very excited. What if one of them could impress the princess? First, the two older brothers tried. But the princess was bored. She said, next!
The youngest brother went to see the princess next. He was carrying a big bag. Inside the bag, he had some stuff he found on the road. He had some food, a basket, a broken plate, two goat horns, and an old shoe.
“Hello!” Ash said to the princess. “Hello.” she said. The princess didn’t smile. “I haven’t eaten yet, so I’m wondering if I can cook something?” Ash asked the princess. “It’s going to make a mess. So no, you may not.” The princess said. She waited for Ash to leave. But he didn’t.
“Don’t worry about any mess. I can cook the food in this basket,” Ash said. “Oh, but the basket has holes and the juice will come out and make a mess,” the princess said. “I’ll catch the juice with my plate,” Ash said.
“You’re not letting me get out of this, are you! You’re trying to bend my words so I let you stay here,” the princess said. “I really don’t mean to,” said Ash, “but since you say the word “bend,” I do have a goat’s horn! It has a curve so it kind of has a bend in it.”
“Well, I’ve never seen such a thing in my whole life,” said the princess. “Look, here’s another one!” said Ash. He pulled out the other goat’s horn.
Now the princess was really annoyed. “This is silly!” she said. You’re trying to wear me down by showing me all of these things!” “No, I’m not trying to wear you down. But this shoe is worn out.” Ash pulled the old shoe out of the bag.
Now the princess had no words to say. She was speechless. The princess looked at Ash and his pile of stuff: the basket, broken plate, goat horns, and old shoe. Ash thought, “Oh no, she’s going to kick me out, just like my brothers.
But then the princess smiled. She started to laugh. She didn’t send Ash away. Ash married the princess and they ruled the kingdom together. The end.
